Sazma made his debut in Whiz Comics no. 2 in 1940, and before long outsold his biggest competitor, Superman, by fourteen million copies a month. Shazam was so popular, he became the first super heroe to be adapted for the screen - a live action ywelve-chapter movie serial released by Republic Pictures in 1941, starring Tom Tyler and Frank Coghlan Jr.

It wasn't long before Fawcett Publications licensed a variety of merchandise - secret decoders, figurines, buttons, paper rockets and dolls, tin toys, collectible cards - and a fan club was created to keep up with demand. Despite the popularity of Shazam and his family. the Big Red Cheesewas finally felled by a lawsuit for copyright infringement and the last issueof the comic book was published in 1953.
