Shipwrecked far from Thule at the end of the last volume, Prince Valiant succeeds in gaining a passage home from a band of hearty Vikings by winning a drinking contest — and a knife fight. He also retrieves his trusty Singing Sword. Then Foster changes gears, and shows the comic, domestic side that helped raise Prince Valiant above all other sword-and-chivalry strips: Aleta goes shopping! His son Arn gets a girlfriend! Still, these are the Dark Ages, and war is never far off, so Val is soon riding off to halt the depredations of the savage Saxon invaders. He takes on two young, enthusiastic squires (not unlike himself a few years ago, he muses). After a series of brutal, bloody battles, one of the squires is captured and tortured to death by the barbarians. Maddened, Val slaughters some of the fleeing enemies, and then, sick with horror, he casts the Singing Sword into the sea. But the Dark Ages are not a good time to go around unarmed...
